River Class Destroyer HMCS MARGAREE October 22nd, 1940 Lost in the North Atlantic, after collision with the freighter PORT FAIRY, while escorting the five ship convoy OL.8. 142 of her ship's company were lost, many of which were survivor's of FRASER's tragic sinking.
River Class Destroyer HMCS OTTAWA September 13th , 1942 Sunk by U91 in the North Atlantic, while escorting convoy ON.127. Lost at about 2330 on 13th September, 1942 due to enemy action being hit by two torpedoes. 114 of her Ship's Company lost.
River Class Destroyer HMCS SKEENA October 25th, 1944 Wrecked in a storm, and grounded near Reykjavik, Iceland.
Town Class Destroyer HMCS ST. CROIX September 20th, 1943 Torpedoed and sunk by U305, south of Iceland, while escorting convoy ON.202. Five officers and 76 men were rescued by HMS ITCHEN, but only one of these survived the loss of the ITCHEN two days later.
Tribal Class Destroyer HMCS ATHABASKAN April 29th, 1944 Sunk by a torpedo from German torpedo boat T24, while operating in the English Channel. Her captain and 128 men were lost, 83 taken prisoner and 44 men rescued by   HMCS HAIDA.
       
Flower Class Corvette HMCS LEVIS September 19th, 1940 Torpedoed by U74, 120 miles off Cape Farewell Greenland, resulting in 18 lives lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS WINDFLOWER December 7th, 1941 While escorting convoy SC.58, she was rammed by Dutch freighter Zypenberg in dense fog off the Grand Banks. She was sunk, and 23 of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS SPIKENARD February 10th, 1942 Torpedoed and sunk by U136, south of Iceland, while escorting convoy SC.67. There were only eight survivors.
Flower Class Corvette   HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN September 11th, 1942 Torpedoed and sunk in the St. Lawrence, near Cap Chat Quebec, by U517. She had just delivered a convoy to Rimouski and was returning to Gaspe. Nine of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS LOUISBURG February 6th, 1943 Attacked and sunk by Italian aircraft east of Oran, while escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Bone, Algeria. 38 of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS WEYBURN February 22nd, 1943 Lost to a mine off Gibraltar. Seven of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS REGINA August 8th, 1944 Torpedoed and sunk by U667, off Trevose Head, Cornwall, England. Thirty of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS ALBERNI August 21st, 1944 Torpedoed and sunk by U480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. 59 of her ship's company were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS SHAWINIGAN November 25th, 1944 While on independent anti-submarine patrol in the Cabot Strait, she was torpedoed and sunk by U1228. All hands were lost.
Flower Class Corvette HMCS TRENTONIAN February 22nd, 1945 Torpedoed and sunk by U1004 near Falmouth, England. Six of her ship's company were lost.
       
River Class Frigate HMCS VALLEYFIELD May 7th, 1944 Torpedoed and sunk by U548, 50 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland. 125 of her ship's company lost.
Auxiliary Trawler, Minesweeper HMCS BRAS D'OR October 19th, 1940 While keeping the Romanian freighter "Ingener N. Vlassopol" under surveillance in the Gulf of St Lawrence, the minesweeper disappeared. Her last know position was 40 20N - 063 50W, near Anticosti Island. Her entire ship's company of 30 men were lost.
Bangor Class Minesweeper HMCS CHEDABUCTO October 21st, 1943 Sunk after night collision with the cable vessel LORD KELVIN, 30 miles from Rimouski, Quebec. One officer was lost.
BANGOR Class Minesweeper HMCS CLAYOQUOT December 24th, 1944 Torpedoed and sunk while taking station on convoy XB.139, in the approaches to Halifax harbour. Sunk by U806. Eight of her crew were lost.
BANGOR Class Minesweeper HMCS GUYSBOROUGH March 17th, 1945 Torpedoed and sunk by U878 in the English Channel off Ushant. Fifty-one of her ship's company were lost.
BANGOR Class Minesweeper HMCS ESQUIMALT April 16th, 1945 Torpedoed and sunk by U190, five miles off Chebucto Head, near Halifax. Forty-four of her ship's company were lost.
Armed Yacht HMCS OTTER March 26th, 1941 Destroyed by an accidental explosion and fire, off Halifax. Two Officers and 17 men were lost.
Armed Yacht HMCS RACCOON September 7th, 1942 Torpedoed and sunk by U 165, while escorting convoy QS.33 in the St. Lawrence River. There were no survivors.
       
Motor Torpedo Boat  MTB 460 July 1st, 1944 Lost to a mine in the English Channel. The commanding officer and 9 men were lost.
Motor Torpedo Boat   MTB 463 July 7th, 1944 Lost to a mine in the English Channel. No crew was lost, although 5 men were wounded.
Motor Torpedo Boat MTB459 February 14th, 1945 Five MTBs were lost to a tragic fire while alongside at Ostend, Belgium. Twenty-eight Canadian sailors were lost.

 Squadron Leader H C Sawyer is depicted here flying his 65 Sqn Spitfire Mk.1a R6799 (YT-D) in the skies above Kent on 31st July 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain. Chasing him is Major Hans Trubenbach of 1 Gruppe, Lehrgeschwader 2 in his Messerschmitt Vf109E-3 (Red 12) . The encounter lasted eight minutes with both pilots surviving.

 Spitfire of 610 Squadron which has been damaged during combat during the height of the Battle of Britain is shown over the white cliffs of Dover.  No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force's first major combat with the Luftwaffe was on 27th May when a Heinkel bomber protected by about 40 Me110s, was engaged.  The combat which followed saw the Heinkel and three Me110 fighters being shot down.  Throughout August 610 Squadron was involved in bitter fighting over the Channel and Home Counties of England.  During the Battle of Britain No.610 Squadron operated from Biggin Hill, Hawkinge, and, on one occasion, from Croydon.  The Squadron put up a terrific show and 40 enemy aircraft were confirmed as having been destroyed by 610 Squadron during August.  The loss to the Squadron was eleven pilots killed during the battle.

The B-17 Flying Fortress 'Memphis Belle' returns from one of her 25 mission over France and Germany.  Memphis Belle, a  B-17F-10-BO, USAAF Serial No.41-24485, was supplied to the USAAF on July 15th 1942, and delivered to the 91st Bomb Group in September 1942  at Dow Field, Bangor, Maine.  Memphis Belle deployed to Scotland at Prestwick on September 30th 1942 and went to RAF Kimbolton on October 1st, and then to her permanent base at Bassingbourn on October 14th.1942.  Memphis Belle was the first United States Army Air Force heavy bomber to complete 25 combat missions with her crew intact.  The aircraft and crew then returned to the United States to promote and sell war bonds.  The Memphis Belle B-17 is undergoing extensive restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Concorde G-BOAE gracefully drifts above London with Buckingham Palace immediately below, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the River Thames and the London Eye in the middle distance. On 24th October 2003, the world said goodbye to this elegant airliner, bringing to a close almost thirty years of commercial supersonic travel.

 Leutnant Klaus Bretschneider, Staffelkapitan of 5./JG300 kicks up the dust as he taxies his Fw190 A-8 Red One from its forest hiding place into the sunlight in preparation for take-off. The scene is northern Germany, November 1944. The Staffelkapitan will lead his 190s in a massed sturm intercept upon incoming American bombers. With Allied fighters dominating the skies, Luftwaffe fighter units took desperate measures to conceal their whereabouts. Commonplace were these hurriedly prepared strips, often near dense forests.

HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

 Shows the action on 26th May 1941 by Swordfish from HMS Ark Royal on the German battleship Bismarck. Fresh from her triumphant encounter with HMS Hood, Bismarck was struck by Swordfishs torpedo which jammed her rudder and was finished off by the home fleet on 27th May 1941.

On Sunday October 25th 1992, HMS Vanguard, the Royal Navys first Trident equipped submarine, arrived off the Clyde Submarine Base, Faslane on the Gareloch. She was escorted by a Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet, the RN shore base at Prestwick Airport, and a mixed surface flotilla, including Defence Police and Royal Marines.

 Wearing her unusual black and white disruptive colour scheme, HMS Repulse is pictured as part of Force Z in company with HMS Prince of Wales and the destroyer Vampire. These two mighty battleships were to be lost within hours of each other, the victims of intense Japanese air strikes. Vampire and the destroyer Electra were on hand to pick up survivors from both ships.

 The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941.  The once proud German ship had been ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck by the British battleships Rodney and King George V.  HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300.

Midday, 21st October 1805, and Admiral Collingwoods flagship, the 100-gun HMS Royal Sovereign, breaks the allied line and delivers a shattering broadside on the Spanish flagship Santa Anna. Making great speed, Collingwoods ship had breached the Franco-Spanish line some distance ahead of the rest of his van and the Royal Sovereign suffered heavily as she quickly drew the attentions of three French and three Spanish ships. To her starboard, the French Indomitable can be seen firing into the British flagship while, astern of the Santa Anna, Belleisle and Fougueux are engaging ahead of Mars, Monarca and Pluton.

 The Battle of Solferino, fought on 24th of June 1859 was the last battle at which both armies were commanded by their monarch; the French army commanded by Napoleon III and his Allies Victor Emmanuel II and his Sardinian Army were victorious over the Austrian Army commanded by Emperor Franz Joseph.

Battle of Assaye  23rd September 1803. Governor General Lord Richard Wellesley ordered his younger Brother General Arthur Wellesley (Later to become Duke of Wellington) to command a British and native force of  4,500 men to the South -Central part of the Peninsula. (At thr same time He also Sent General Gerard Lake to the north of India, see Battle fo Laswarree for further details)  General Arthur Wellesley, met a much larger Maratha Force of some 26,000 strong at Assaye in Hydrabad. on September 23rd 1803.  The Battle of Assaye became one of the bloodiest battle Arthur Wellesley fought, receiving 1500 casualties out of a force of 4,500. But the Maratha were routed and Assaye was a British Victory.

 Icy rain adds its misery to the bitter conflict on Drumossie Moor. In the shadow of the Black Isle, two English ships on the waters of the Moray Firth, await the outcome of the decisive battle. Pounded by Cumberlands gunners and raked by steady musketry, the Princes brave men can make no headway. Although the Irish and French regulars refuse to give ground, the Jacobite lines gradually disintegrate. Tired, cold and hungry men flea past Culloden House for the relative safety of Inverness. On the Scottish right the Argyll Militia, supported by Hawleys Dragoons, tear down the walls of the Culwiniac and Culchunaig enclosures in an outflanking attack. Avochies men offer some resistance but Major Gillies McBean stands alone on the breach. He cuts down more than a dozen Argylls, including Lord Robert Kerr, who lies mortally wounded, but his foes are too many. The hero eventually falls to a vicious cut to the forehead, his thigh bone is also broken. Despite the cries of a mounted officer to save that brave man, the major is ruthlessly bayonetted, his back against the wall. The victory is complete and nothing more can be done. In the distance, the Young Pretender is forced to abandon the field and Scotlands hope of claiming the British Throne.

Sir John Moores epic retreat to Corunna was punctuated by desperate and often heroic rear-guard actions - none more dramatic than the cavalry clash at Benevente on the 29th December 1808. Having crossed the river Esla, cold and swollen by recent rainfall, a British picquet, comprised of elements of the Kings German Legion Hussars and the 7th, 10th and 18th Hussars, covers the river and its tactically demolished Castro Gonzalos bridge from a position near the town of Benevente. Napoleon himself leads the pursuit. The Emperors elite Guard Light Cavalry, commanded by General Lefebvre-Desnouettes, is ordered at daylight to ford the river and launch a surprise attack on what appears to be the numerically inferior British units. As five-hundred and fifty French cavalry emerge in orderly fashion from the river, intent upon quickly dispatching the opposition, they are startled to find the British piquet, reinforced by a host of British cavalry, streaming from within the confines of Benevente, some on their left flank. Under the command of Lord Paget, the British become the pursuers of the surprised French, who turn and retreat with the frigid waters of the Esla blocking their escape. Unlike their crossing in echelon just minutes before, the French now in disorder plunge into the river, where many drown. Others are captured including General Lefebvre-Desnouettes who is made prisoner by Grisdale of the 10th Hussars following a dramatic pursuit. General Lefebvre-Desnouettes will eventually escape from captivity in England, to encounter Lord Paget once again on the field of Waterloo.

 German forces encircled in the fortress town of Konigsberg by 3rd Ukranian front prepare to break through the besieging Soviet lines to re-establish a supply line to the Baltic. Here some Stug III assault guns move up to their assembly area next to the towns World War One memorial. From here the attack was launched on February 18th 1945 and successfully opened a supply corridor which remained in place until 8th April.

Eddie Irvine raced Formula Ford from 1983 to 1988.  Driving a variety of different chassis, he won two Formula Ford championships by the end of 1987.  In 1988, Eddie drove in the British Formula Three championship and then joined the Jordan Formula 3000 team for 1990.  He won his first race at Hockenheim, finishing third overall in the championship that year.  The following three years saw Eddie driving in the Japanese F3000 series, almost winninh the title in 1993.  He also drove for Toyota at Le Mans holding the lap record for several years.  At the end of 1993 Eddie drove for the Jordan F1 team and gained notoriety by overtaking Ayrton Senna having only just been lapped by him.  In 1996, Eddie took on the unenviable role as number two to Michael Schumacher at Ferrari but in 1999 became the number one driver for Ferrari following a serious accident for Schumacher.
