HMS
Irresistible. Royal Naval battleship of the Formidable
Class. The first vessel to be sent to Gibraltar as a
guardship was the Devastation, but her place was to be taken by
Irresistible, one of the London class battleships, in 1902. She was an
exceedingly powerful vessel, and the Commander-in-Chief in the
Mediterranean would not allow her to remain at the Rock in idleness, but
utilised her as an addition to his squadron. The picture shows the
Irresistible leaving Portsmouth Harbour, and allows a contrast between her
look of stern fighting power with the old time veterans the St Vincent and
the Victory and a smart little brig the Martin.
Armament: four 12inch guns, twelve 6 inch guns, sixteen 12 pdr guns,
two 12 pdr guns, six 3 pdr guns, 2 maxims and four torpedo
tubes. Displacement: 15,000 tons. Speed: 18
knots. Complement: 780 (flagship 810). |

WILLIAM BURROWS.. I
had an uncle of who was a stoker (i think) on the above battle cruiser.
He was one William Burrows. He died
when the ship was torpedoed - he apparently had gone back to save the
cat!! I do have a photo of
this young man. Can you advise if you have crew lists for this
ship and if so check and see if his name is on it. His parents
were Emma (nee crebeau) and William Burrows. If
you do have his name perhaps we could exchange a copy of the photo for his
crew information. look forward
to hearing from you. Diane email

HORACE HEPPENDSTALL (Born Birmingham 29th/11/1870) My
Grandfather served on either HMS Irresistible or HMS ocean, both of which
were sunk in the Dardanelle's in 1915. He survived and returned to his
family in Hull. I am hoping somebody will have information on these ships
and their crews. hopefully on Horace Heppenstall. If you can help please
contact Stephen Stubbs at email here
