This Cruiser appears to be HMS Defence. There are
five large turrets on the sides . the searchlight platforms are mounted
between number 1 and number 2 funnels and number 3 and number 4 funnels
and has a ram bow (info supplied by R. Mar) |

Defence - Name History |
|
The eighth “DEFENCE” is a 14-gun twin-screw
cruiser, launched at Pembroke in 1907.
She is of 14,600 tons, 27,000 horse-power, and 23 knots speed.
Her length, beam, and draught were 490ft., 74ft., and 26ft.
From November 1911 to February 1912 the “Defence,”
commanded Henry H. Bruce, had the honour of acting as one of the escort
to H.M.S. “Medina.” The
“Medina,” flying the Royal Standard, was conveying the King Emperor,
His Majesty King George the Fifth, to India, where his Majesty’s
Coronation Durbar was helld at Delhi on December 12th, 1911. |

HMS
DEFENCE. Launched on the 24th April 1907. HMS Defence joined
the 5th Cruiser squadron in February 1909. but transferred in July to the
Home Fleet, 1st Cruiser Squadron. During November and December 1912 HMS
defence escorted the Royal yacht Medina. the going on to the China
station as The new Flagship. rejoining the 1st Cruiser squadron as
Flagship in 1913. at the out break of World war One, She immediately
became active in the search for the German ships Goeben and Breslau
in August 1914. She was stationed in the Mediterranean in the Dardanelle's.
After September 1914 she joined Admirals Cradlocks squadron and went
to the cape of Good hope in November. Became Flagship to the 1st
cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet. at the Battle of Jutland she
was sunk by gunfire from the German battleship Friedrich der Grosse. on
the 31st May 1916. The entire crew was lost due to a cordite charge catching
fire in the ammunition stores. 893 officers and men lost their lives.

Completion HMS Minotaur joined the Royal navy's 5th Cruiser Squadron in
may 1908 but transferring in April the following year to the 1st cruiser
Squadron and becoming Flagship to the 1st cruiser Squadron. served at the
China Station between 1910 and 1914. After the outbreak of world war one,
HMS Minotaur escorted Australian troop ships during November 1914. at
serving at the cape of Good Hope as flagship. returning back to Britain
for a refit in December 1914. In 1916 became flagship to the 2nd Cruiser
squadron Took part in the Battle of Jutland. After the war she was placed
in reserve in June 1919 and eventually sold for scrapping and broken
up which started on the 12th April 1920 |

HMS Shannon |

HMS
Shannon.
Launched on the 20th September 1906 and commissioned into
the Royal Navy's 5th Cruiser squadron in march 1908 as flagship for the
rear admiral. In April 1909 transferred to the 2nd Cruiser squadron but in
December 1909 HMS Shannon was involved in a collision with HMS
Prince George in Portsmouth sustaining damage. Re-commissioned in
march 1912 into the 3rd cruiser Squadron and in 1913 joining 2nd cruiser
squadron. on the outbreak of world war one she joined the Grand fleet in
August 1914, went into refit in November 1914 at Cromarty. Took part in
the Battle of Jutland, and in November 1916 went to Murmansk. Joined
the Atlantic Convoys escorting convoys between 1917- 1918. after the war
HMS Shannon was placed in reserve in 1920. becoming an accommodation ship
attached to HMS Actaeon finally paid off and scrapped 12th December 1922. |

THOMAS EDWARD BOGG. My great uncle was killed
at the battle of Jutland while serving on HMS defence. I am looking for
any information on the ship as well as any photographs of HMS Defence. Can

HMS MINOTAUR
LESLIE HARRY CHARLES VALENTINE.. My grandfather served as an able
seaman on a Thames class ship from 1907-1911 based at Chatham. He also
served on HMS Minotaur, HMS Impregnable and HMS Agincourt. I am trying
to find his birth date. If anyone has any suggestions contact me at fishers.cottage@virgin.net
