The French Warship Montcalm in 1902 Built at La Seyne, the Montcalm was an armoured cruiser of a somewhat peculiar sight. She belonged to a group of three and displaced 9,517 tons. Amidships she had a belt of 6 in of Harveyised nickel steel, which tapered to the ends, but she had other armour above it and forward. Her two 7.6 in guns were well protected, she also carried eight 6.4 in guns which were also behind armour. She had 20 Normand boilers, and was capable of a speed of 21 knots. It was easy to recognise this class because of the peculiar arrangement of the funnels - two behind the military mast forward and the other two a long way aft. |
