Battleship histories. Royal naval Battle cruisers HMS Courageous and HMS Glorious.  Lord Fisher ordered three Battle cruisers in early 1915 which were proposed to support the intended landings in the Baltic.  HMS Courageous was ordered from Armstrong at Elswick and laid down on the 28th march 1915, launched 5th February 1916 and completed in January 1917. during her sea trials she suffered buckling between her breakwater and the 15-inch Barbette, and was fitted with 130 tons of stiffening. she joined the 3rd light Cruiser squadron of the Grand Fleet and then the 1st cruiser squadron. in April 1917 sje was converted for mine laying.  On the 17th November 1917 along with HMS Glorious and HMS Repulse engaged German forces at Heligoland bight. expended 92 15inch shells and scoring hits on the German Cruiser Pillau. She also fired nearly 250 6 inch shells scoring no hits. After the war joined the Gunnery Scholl and later becoming Flagship to the reserve Fleet.. between 1924- 1928 she was converted to a aircraft carriers (see Aircraft Carriers for further details).

HMS Glorious. Built by Harland and Wolff and laid down on the 1st May 1915 and launched on the 20th April 1914, completed January 1917. She was commissioned into the Royal navy and became the Flagship of the 3rd Light Cruiser squadron, then joined the 1st Cruiser squadron of the grand Fleet. Also took part in the Heligoland Bight action firing 57 150-inch shells and scoring hits of the German Cruiser Pillau also expending nearly 250 6 - inch shells.. In 1919 joined the Gunnery training school at Devonport and also became flagship in the reserve fleet. Converted to aircraft carrier `1024 to 1930.

The above picture of HMS Courageous was sent in by Ken Stokes whose father (now sadly deceased) trained as a gunner on board.

Displacement: 19,230   Speed: 32 knots   Compliment: 828-842  Armament: Four 15-inch guns in pairs, eighteen four inch guns in threes, two 3 inch guns , two 3 pdr guns and two 21 inch torpedo tubes.
