HAROLD BERTRAM HENNESSAY.. I
have just come across your website and was very interested to read about
HMS Courageous. My father, Harold Bertram Hennessay, served on
this ship from 3 April 1918 to 30 January 1919 initially as a Boy Teleg.
and then an Ord. Teleg.
My father joined the
Royal Navy in 1917. Reading from his Certificate of Service he was
on the Impregnable, Ganges, Courageous, Pembroke, Emperior of India,
Theseus and Grafton between 1917 and 1920. He left in 1922 and
received a British War Medal and Victory Medal. I would like to know
more about these medals as these were probably kept by his first wife and
I had no knowledge of them until recently.
He returned in 1929 as a
Steward and was on the Andora Star, Highland Pride (he was on the voyage
when this ship was wrecked) and served out the remainder of his time in
the navy on the Highland Monarch until 1934. I have a photograph of
the Highland Monarch.
My father died in 1981 just before his
81st birthday. He was living in South Africa at the time. It
was only when my mother died last year that I came across all his naval
papers. I am his younger daughter, Diana Bolton and live in Perth,
Australia.
p.s.
My father's youngest brother, Jimmy Hennessay, was drowned on
his first naval voyage when the vessel he was on sank with Lord Kitchener
on board.
