Resolution Class Submarines.  Photographs and history of the Royal Navy submarines of the Resolution Class, launched 1966 - 1968.  Class includes HMS Resolution, HMS Repulse, HMS Renown and HMS Revenge. In 1962 it was decided to transfer British Nuclear deterrent force form the RAF to the Royal navy. After the cancellation of the Skybolt airborne system.  It was planned that 5 Submarines be built in Britain based on the American Lafayette Submarine class.  These submarines would be armed with the Polaris Missile, Built in the US. (along with the control system and tubes,.)  In 1964 the fifth Submarine (to be named HMS Ramillies was cancelled.) with the other four being built at Vickers Armstrong, HMS resolution and HMS Repulse  and two being built at Cammel laird,  HMS renown and HMS Revenge

Displacement: 7500 tons / 8500 tons,  Crew 143.  Speed;  20 Knots / 25 Knots.  Armament:  16 Polaris A- 3 Missiles    Six 21 -inch Torpedo Tubes

Dawn Departure by Robert Barbour.

A freezing winter dawn breaks over the Gareloch as HMS Repulse heads out on another Atlantic Patrol. She is escorted as far as the deeper waters of the Firth of Clyde by assorted craft from Faslane base, including a Police launch and an inflatable.

RFA Fort Austin makes a leisurely rendezvous at sunset with the Polaris submarine HMS Renown on patrol somewhere in mid ocean. Soon a rubber inflatable will be launched from the Fort, and mail and fresh fruit and vegetables will be transferred before darkness sets in and makes the operation more hazardous.
