HMS Royal Sovereign, the
first turret ship in the Royal Navy to see service. Built at Portsmouth
Dockyard and Launched 25th April 1857 and completed 20th August
1864. She was converted to a turret ship during building as
she was meant to be a 3 three decker, she was strengthened to
carry the turrets. she was a good sea boat but was quick to roll initially
aimed to be a coastal defence ship she had a larger draught
which made her not suitable for this roll.
