DEFENCE CLASS IRONCLADS

Defence class Broadside ironclads, ordered under the Naval programme of 1859. The Defence class were in all tense and purposes smaller warrior class and classified as frigates.  They were barque-rigged ships, but HMS Defence was modified in 1864 to a ship rig. But again reverting to a barque rig during her refit of 1866/1866.  

HMS Defence was built by palmers at Jarrow and laid down in December 1859, launched 24th April 1861 and completed 2nd December 1861. (major refit 1866 to 1868 when she was also re armed .  her sea service ended in 1885 when she was used as a training ship under the name of HMS Indus and was hulked in 1922, finally being scrapped in 1935.

Displacement: 6070 tons   Speed: 11.7 Knots.  Complement 460.  Armament: Eight  7 - inch Breach loaders, Ten 68 pounder SB, and Four 5 - inch  breach loaders.  replaced in 1868 With Two 8 inch MLR, and fourteen 7 - inch MLR.

HMS Resistance was built by Westwood and Baillie at Millwall and laid down December 1859, launched 11th April 1861 and completed 2nd July 1862.   Was re armed during her refit of 1867 / 1869  her sea career finished in 1880. In 1885 she was used for Gunnery and Torpedo experiments. Sold in 1898 but foundered at Holyhead Bay in 1899, raised and broken up later that year.

 

Displacement 6,150 tons) Speed: 11.8 Knots.  Complement 460.  Armament: Six  7 - inch Breach loaders, Ten 68 pounder SB, and  Two 32 pounders. These being  replaced in 1868 With Two 8 inch MLR, and fourteen 7 - inch MLR.

HMS DEFENCE 24TH APRIL 1861 BECAME TRAINING SHIP INDUS IN 1898. SCRAPPED IN 1935.
HMS RESISTANCE 11TH APRIL 1861 USED FOR TARGET PRACTICE IN 1880s. SOLD IN 1898 BUT SANK IN HOLYHEAD BAY. SHE WAS RAISED AND SCRAPPED.

HMS Defence - Name History

The seventh ?DEFENCE? was a 16-gun screw battleship, launched at Jarrow in 1861.  She was of 6150 tons, 2600 horse-power, and 11 knots speed.  Her length, beam, and draught were 280ft., 54ft., and 26ft.  For many years the ?Defence? acted as a coastguard ship at Holyhead, but her name was eventually changed to ?Indus,? and she acted as a mechanician?s training-ship at Plymouth.
