HMS Dreadnought - Name History

The eighth “DREADNOUGHT” was a 4-gun twin-screw turret ship launched at Pembroke in 1875. She was of 10,820 tons, 8200 horse-power, and 14.5 knots speed. Her length, beam, and draught were 320ft., 64ft., and 27ft. This vessel’s original name was “Fury,” but it was changed to “Dreadnought” before completion. From June 8th, 1886, to April 20th, 1888, H. R. H. Prince George of Wales, now His Most Gracious Majesty King George the fifth, served in this ship as a Lieutenant, with the exception of two short periods- August 1st, 1886, to September 16th, 1886, when he was lent to the “Thunder,” and May 20th, 1887, to July 1st, 1887, when he served in the “Alexandra.” In 1899 HMS Dreadnought had a refit where extra machine guns were mounted and the funnels were raised. In 1903, the black, white and buff livery was changed to grey. She went into reserve at Hamoaze for her final years and in 1908 the “Dreadnought” was sold at Portsmouth.

One of the most notable pilots of 3 Squadron was the Frenchman Pierre Clostermann who enjoyed much success flying Spitfires with the Free French 341 Alsace Squadron before moving to 602 and 274 Squadrons RAF. Once on the strength of 3 Squadron, however, he quickly got to grips with the mighty Hawker Tempest V in which he downed two Focke-Wulf Fw.190D-9s on 20th April 1945, just two of the confirmed 12 aircraft destroyed whilst flying the Tempest, plus 6 shared and two probables. He is shown here flying Tempest V NV724, bearing the legend Le Grand Charles and the Squadron badge on the tailfin.

Designed by the great Ernst Heinkel, the diminutive D.1 was an essential stop-gap that provided the Austro-Hungarian pilots with a front line fighter until they were able to re-equip with Albatros scouts in the Summer of 1917. This little aircraft performed well and was generally held in high regard by its pilots, although it did have some shortcomings, namely that forward vision was extremely limited and the Schwarzloses gun was completely concealed in the overwing pod that made it inaccessible in the air. Most unusual of all was its interplane strut arrangement, designed to reduce drag, which gave it the nicknames Starstrutter or Spider. These examples are shown passing above the German cruiser Derfflinger.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Widge Gleed is depicted in his personal Hurricane 1 P2798 (LK-A) of 87 Sqn shooting down a Messerschmitt Bf.110 on 15th August 1940. Just visible beneath the cockpit of the Hurricane is his mascot, Figaro, shown kicking a swastika. His aircraft was also easily identifiable by the red flash on its nose, a feature that was retained even when P2798 was painted all black for its night fighter role. Gleed scored many victories before being shot down and killed whilst flying a Spitfire Vc in the Western Desert in April 1943.

His canvas entitled Derby Winners depicts these six. They include the great Shergar, who ran the fastest Derby in history and won by a record ten lengths. Also included are Golden Fleece, Reference Point, Teenoso, The Minstrel and the fantastic Nashwan. Any of these could be classified as the greatest.
