| Barque rigged armoured wooden screw sloop of 1350 tons displacement. Length 180 ft. pp; beam 36 ft. Draught 11 ft. 10 in. forward, 15 ft. 8 in. aft. Ordered as "Circasian" but name changed in July, 1862. Armament: Initially armed with BLs but after unfavourable reports on these from the Pacific Station they were replaced in 1868 with 4 x 7" RML. Complement: 130. Machinery: Ravenhill, Salkeld & Co. 2 cyl. horizontal single expansion. Single screw. Bunkers: 95 tons. Speed under power about 10 kts. Speed under sail 9.5 knots. A sluggish mover but dry. |
Served in the Channel in 1864 and then went to the Mediterranean. Refitted at Malta in 1868. Returned to UK and paid off into reserve in 1871 at Sheerness. |
