HMS Neptune Laid Down : Launched : March 1878 Completed : 28th March 1883 Type : Battleship Class : Builder : Dudgeon, Cubitt Town, London Country : UK Pennants : Fate : Sold for scrap 15th September 1903 and broken up in Germany 1904. |
| HMS Neptune, was built initially for the Brazilian Government by Dudeon at Millwall, she was to be called Independencia. Laid down in 1873 and was launched 10th September 1874. She had problems on her initial attempt to be launched on the 16th July 1874, and on the second attempt HMS Neptune (Independencia) got stuck on the slipway which caused a lot of damage on the 30th July 1874. taken to Samudas Poplar for repairs. she successfully completed her trials in December 1877. Due to the Possible Russian conflict the ship was purchased by the Admiralty and taken to Portsmouth for Further alterations. These modifications included replacing the armament with standard Royal naval 12 inch MLR and 9 inch Guns |
