HMS Hero. Conqueror class turret ship of the Royal Navy. The battleship HMS Hero was launched 27th October 1885, she differed from HMS Conqueror only in that all four of her 6 inch guns were mounted on the superstructure. At the end of Hero's career it was used as a target from November 1907 and was finally sunk off the Kentish Knock on 18th February 1908. she was ordered under the naval estimates of 1878 - 1879. and was basically an enlarged version of HMS Rupert. But both ships of the class were to small for overseas duties as they had poor stability and rolled heavily and during bad weather could only make about 10 knots. So spent most of their working life as Gunnery training ships. Displacement: 6,440 tons. Length: 270 ft. Beam: 58ft. Draught: 24ft. Armament: two 45 ton BLR, four 6 inch guns, six 14 inch torpedo tubes. Horse power: 6,000. Speed: 15.5 knots. |
