MESSAGES
I would be interested to hear from anyone who knew of any American
servicemen on board during September 1945. My wife has a small
bible from an uncle of hers who was an American serviceman. The
inscription in the bible says "From the Chaplains Office, His
Majestys Ship Queen Elizabeth 16th September 1945". This is
handwritten on a form that is stuck inside the front cover which also
has a warning from the White House that only Christian names should be
written and that no service details should be written that might be of
use to the enemy. Contact

While chatting with
my father about his naval experiences during WW2, a programme about the
attack on HMS Queen Elizabeth was advertised, I think for the History
channel. My father made a statement 'That fellow the count
doesn't know how lucky he was'. Apparently my grandfather a
Warrant Officer in the Royal Artillery was in charge of the escort
that took them away after the raid. He was taken to room with high
ranking officers where he was given instructions that the prisoners were
'to be shot while trying to escape' and that they were not
to reach their destination alive. (I think he said Tripoli.) He
apparently asked for this in writing and was refused. When he
eventually handed the prisoners over after their journey he was
immediately posted to the middle of Africa to serve with the Kings
Own African Rifles until the war was over. He was not demobbed until
late 1946 without being allowed any leave since the incident back in
1942.
Strange story. Can you tell me who the frogmen were?
