HMS Monarch masted turret ship was the first
sea going turret ship and the first British warship equipped with
12" guns. She was the fastest battleship around and she
was also fast under sails, but difficult to handle. Built at Chatham
Dockyard. and laid down 1st June 1866, launched 25th May 1868 and
completed 12th June 1869. she was altered in 1872 to carry a
barque-rig. and in 1878 two torpedo launchers were fitted. More modifications
were done in 1890 and 1897 . TOOK PART IN THE BOMBARDMENT OF
ALEXANDRIA BEFORE BECOMING A GUARDSHIP IN 1897. SHE WAS RENAMED
SIMOOM IN 1904 WHEN SHE BECAME A DEPOT SHIP. SOLD FOR SCRAP IN 1905. |
