Roy Salvadori
| Roy Salvadori (deceased) Roy Francesco Salvadori - Formula One racing driver born in 1922. in Dovercourt, Essex. Racing for several Formula One teams, including Aston Martin and BRM, Roy Salvadori started racing in 1947 and graduated to Formula One, making his debut in 1952. His best result in the Formula One World Championship was 4th in 1958. Outside of Formula One, he has also raced GT and sportscars, including a win at the 1959 Le Mans race. Roy Francesco Salvadori participated in 50 Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, debuting on 12t July 1952, and achieved two podiums, scoring a total of 19 Championship points. During his career in 1959 he also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving for Aston martin and teamed with Carroll Shelby. Salvadori switched back to Cooper in 1960, and almost won the 1961 United States GP – he was closing in on Innes Irelands Lotus when the engine broke in the closing stages of the race! He quit after a final F1 season with Lola in 1962 and competed in sports car racing for a couple more years before retiring for good. After retiring from driving he returned to running his car dealership, but in 1966 Roy Francesco Salvadori was tempted back to Formula One to manage the Cooper racing team for two seasons. |
