At 0200 hours on the 30th May 1906, HMS Montagu ran ashore on the rocks at the south west corner of Lundy Island during the fog. Over a period of several months many attempts were made to free the ship but all were unsuccessful. But some salvage of the ship did take place. The Liverpool salvage Company, managed to remove her big guns and many fittings before the Montagu was abandoned. The guns were removed by the use of sheer legs. the first turret guns removed were the fore turret. the method was by removing the top plates of the turrets. then the guns were lifted. |
