USS Enterprise  CV-6

USS Enterprise was built at  Newport News and launched o the 3rd October 1936 and completed in ay 1938.  She was at sea with the carrier force and flagship of Task Force 8 under the command of Vice Admiral Halsey delivery aircraft to Wake Island when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.  In April 1942 she escorted USS Hornet  which was carrying the Mitchell bombers for the famous Tokyo raid.  During the Battle of Midways USS Enterprise lost a large number of her Torpedo Bombers. But her dive bombers along with aircraft of the other carriers sank three Japanese carriers. this event changed the course of the war.  On 24th August 1942  USS Enterprise  suffered three hits which killed 74 servicemen during the Battle of the eastern  Solomon's.  and again during the Battle of Santa Cruz she again was hit by two bombs which killed a further 44 servicemen.   USS Enterprise was also present in further campaigns in the pacific and was damaged during Kamikazes off Okinawa in April and May  1945 . After the war she served as an attack carrier and as a anti submarine warfare carrier and was finally broken up in 1957.  (Cranston Fine Arts have produced a superb singed limited edition of this fine carrier shown at bottom of the page)

MESSAGES

ALTON F COPE.. My father Alton served on Yorktown and was aboard when she sank during the Battle of Midway. Does anyone remember him or have a list of surviving crew members.

THOMAS J GOODE... My father was on board the Yorktown during the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway as a forward sky lookout. I would like to know if anybody remembers him. He is now very sick and is unable to tell me about the ship. I am a naval history buff and would like to know anything and everything about that great ship. If anyone remembers my father who was just 17 at the time of the battles please contact me Robert Goode
