Colonel John Waddy

Born in 1920, John Waddy joined the army shortly before the outbreak of World War Two. He saw action as a paratrooper in Italy and North Africa before taking part in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Arnhem. As he and his small group of his men approached a German flak gun to attack it, they were shot at by a sniper. One of the men was killed next to Waddy, and he was shot before being carried to relative safety. After being operated on, he was wounded twice more as the temporary hospital he was located in was shelled. The building was eventually taken over by the Germans and Waddy was taken prisoner, transferring to a camp after he had recovered sufficiently from his wounds. After liberation in 1945, Waddy stayed with the Army and in 1964 became director of the SAS.
