The Scott's Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd was
begun in 1711 by John Scott, the Scott's Shipbuilding company was the first
shipbuilding company in the world. the Scots Shipyard was on the River
Clyde at Greenock the companies. first 55 years it built small boats
mostly fishing boats, but started in the mid 1760's to build larger
ships, In 1825 they built its first Graving dock and soon after work
began on HMS Greenock a steam propelled frigate in 1849. In 1825
Scott's took over the William Brownlie Iron and Brass Foundry later to be called
The Greenock Foundry. This foundry would go onto build the heavy machinery
for British battleships at the turn of the century including HMS Prince of Wales.
In 1906 The Royal navy Heavy Cruiser HMS Argyll was built. other large Cruisers
and Battleships would be built In 1910 HMS Colossus,
In 1913 HMS Ajax. and during the great war, the light
Cruisers HMS Caradoc and HMS Dragon. In 1921 HMS
Durban was built along with the Destroyers. (M Class) HMS Obediant, HMS
Obdurate, HMS Paladin, HMS Parthian, HMS Plucky, HMS Portia, and the
Modified R Class destroyers, HMS Tirade, and HMS Ursula, and W
Class destroyers, HMS Westminster and HMS Windsor, and Two S Class
destroyers, HMS Swallow, and HMS swordsman (later sold to Australia in
1919) HMS Strenuous, HMS Stronghold and HMS Sturdy. Some modified
W Class destroyers were planned built were cancelled after the war.
Scott's are known for there Building of Submarines which
started in 1912 with the building of The S Class Submarines with the
first S1 launched 28th February 1914 this was followed by S2, and S3. also
launched at this time was E31 launched on the 23rd August 1915,
thi9s was followed by E51, They continue to build Submarines to this day including
submarines for the Australian Navy.
the The Oxley Class. Between world war one and World War
Two. Scott's Built the cruisers HMS Galatea also in 1935 and in 1937 HMS
Glasgow. Between 1930 and 1944 Scott's built 16 Destroyers and and
over 16 submarines. During World, war Tow the cruisers HMS Bonaventure, Scylla
and HMS Royalist were built.
