Destroyer Torpedo Boats built on Speculation by Palmer's, John Brown and Co, Clydebank, Fairfield and Armstrong Whitworth. These destroyers HMS Thorn, Tiger, Vigilant, Kangeroo, Lively, Spritely, viper, Cobra, Velox, and HMS Taku built between 1899 and 1902.

  Destroyers Built by John Brown and Co, Clydebank, on speculation and were finally bought by the Admiralty to include ion the 1900- 1901 navy estimates.  Displacement: 380 tons, Speed  30 knots, Armament; one 12 pounder and two torpedo tubes Compliment: 63

HMS Tiger.

On 2nd April 1908, The Portsmouth division of the home Fleet under the command of rear- Admiral Farquhar  flying his flag on HMS Prince George. left Portsmouth for exercise in the Channel. With the Torpedo -Flotilla following later with orders to attack the squadron after darkness had fallen. A little after 8 pm the destroyers attacked the fleet, 18 miles south of St Catherine's with their lights out. During the attack HMS Tiger while crossing the bows of HMS Berwick was struck by the cruisers ram and cut completely in two. The fore end of the destroyer sank almost at once, the after part remaining afloat long enough for 13 men to be rescued form it. in all 22 of her crew were saved, but 28 were lost, including Lt W E Middleton, who was in command.

Below: Built by Palmers. Fitted with reed Boilers which gave 6,200 HP, and a speed of 30 knots, Displacement: 370 to 400 tons, Armament: one 1 2 pounder gun and two torpedo tubes.  Compliment: 63.  HMS Kangaroo and HMS Myrmidon served a period in the Mediterranean and then Home waters.  HMS Spiteful in 21904 had her boilers changed to Burn Oil to experiment. and trials were also carried out on HMS Peteral. these experiments were discontinued after encountering problems with Dense clouds of smoke.

HMS Syren 20th December 1900 Broken up in 1920.

Torpedo boat destroyer HMS Syren in 1902. Launched in 1900 she was 210 ft long with a displacement of 365 tons and a speed of 30 knots.

Built by Cammell Laird  on speculation that the Admiralty would require extra Destroyers they were laid down on the 20th June 1899, HMS Lively being launched 14th July 1900 and Completed April 1902, and HMS Sprightly Launched 25th September and completed March 1902.  Displacement: 385 tons.

 Below: HMS Cobra was built by Armstrong Whitworth on speculation that the Admiralty would purchase more Torpedo Boat destroyers, Her Displacement was 400 tons, Speed  31 knots   and 36.5 knots, on her trials. Armament: one 12 pounder gun plus two torpedo tubes. She broke her back and sunk, the disaster was never really solved, the fracture and break occurred about 150 feet from the bows. The Royal navy on the loss of Cobra objected to Snake names being given to the ships as HMS Viper had sunk and the cruiser HMS serpent was lost in 1890.

Below. HMS Taku,  Was built by Schichau at Elbing  for the Chinese Navy. She was captured by the British at Taku in 1900  and served with the Royal navy until 1916 when she was sold at Hong Kong.  Displacement: 305 tons, Speed 32 knots, Armament: Six 3 pounder guns, and two 14 - inch Torpedo Tubes  Compliment: 58

Palmer Class Destroyers
HMS Erne 14th January 1903 Wrecked in 1915.
HMS Etterick 28th February 1903 Broken up in 1919.
HMS Exe 27th April 1903 Broken up in 1920.

Below: HMS Albacore and HMS Bonetto, were built by palmers, on speculation that the Admiralty would require more destroyers,  These were both purchased in 1909 to replace the losses of HMS gala and HMS Tiger.. Displacement: 440 tons, speed: 26.5 knots Compliment: 64. Armament: Three  12 pounders and two Torpedo Tubes.  Both serve din Home waters with HMS Albacore joining Scapa Flow Local patrol Flotilla. HMS Bonetto later became a tender to the Submarine Flotilla in the Clyde and later in the Tyne.

HMS Bonetta 14th January 1907 Sold for scrapping in June 1920.
