The Northampton class
cruisers were improved variation on the Pensacola class.
Displacement: 9,050
tons, Speed: 32.7 knots, Crew 1100. Armament: Nine 8-inch
Guns, Eight 5 - inch AA Guns and Three aircraft.
USS Northampton. was
built at Bethlehem (Quincy) and launched 5th September 1929. Completed May
1930.During World War Two, USS Northampton served at Midway, Santa Cruz,
Battle for Guadalcanal, Tassafaronga, and during the early stages of the
Pacific Raids, until being sunk on the 1st December 1942.

USS Chester USS
Chester displacement was slightly heavier by 150 tons to the rest of the
class. USS Chester . Built at New York and launched 3rd July 1929
completed June 1930. During world war two, she served 1942 -
1945 in the Corel Sea, Gilbert Islands, Kwajalein, Iow ,
Okinawa, and the Pacific raids but on the 1st December 1942 she was
torpedoed by Japanese Submarine I-176. served for many years
after the war and finally scrapped at Panama City November 1959 |

USS Chicago USS
Chicago was built at Mare Island navy yard and launched 10th April
1930. she was built as a flagship which meant more accommodation
being built of the forecastle. and was completed March
1931. USS Chicago was escorting the Carrier USS Lexington
ferrying aircraft to Midway Island on 7th December 1941. and so escaping
for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In February 1942 she joined the combined
naval force of Of Australian new Zealand and American naval warships
operating in the South West Pacific and was present during the
battle of the Coral Sea. In June the squadron became the Task Force 44
under the overall command of Rear-Admiral Crutchley RN. and in
August was assigned to Task Force 18 escorting supply convoys to
Guadalcanal-Tulagi
and at Savo Island she was damaged in a torpedo attack by Japanese
aircraft and during a second attack the next day she was sunk.

Houston was built at Mare navy yard and launched 10th April 1930.
she was built as a flagship which meant more accommodation
being built of the forecastle and completed June 1930. She
served during the war Far East 1942. |

USS Augusta
USS Augusta was built at Newport News and launched
1st February 1930. she was built as a flagship which meant
more accommodation being built of the forecastle and completed
January 1931. During world War two is served first in the Atlantic.
In November 1942 She served with the Allied western Task Force during
Operation Torch covering troop landing in Morocco and the Allied Invasion
of North Africa,. In July 1943 along with the USS Alabama and USS South
Dakota along with RN ships took part in a fake operation against the
coast of Norway, to misle3d the Germans away for the actual planned
landings in Sicily. In June 1944 as the flagship of Admiral Kirk
commanding the Western task Force during the Allied landings at Normandy.
In August USS Augusta Provided support for the 1st Special
force on the Island of Levante on the Mediterranean coast of Southern France.
She remained in service after the end of the war and finally broken up Kearny April 1960 |
