American battleship histories. American naval
battleship USS Nevada. Battleship website dedicated to the history of USS Nevada
from launch to participation in major wars also notice board for naval
historians interested in the USS Nevada. USS
NEVADA (BB36) This was a
dramatic new design, There design gave them very long range and had very
thick deck armour with a highly centralized fire control. USS Nevada was
built by Fore River and was launched on the 11th July 1914, completed on
the 11th June 1916, Near the end of 1917 a number of the secondary 5 -
inch guns were reduced to twelve. Along with her sister ship, when the US
entered the great war, they were stationed in Ireland and took part in
convoy protection. Between the wars, the USS Nevada received new
Turbines which were originally intended for the USS North Dakota, with
these new turbines her speed was increased to 20.2 knots during
trials. The Nevada was badly damaged during the Japanese raid on
Pearl harbor but she ran aground in shallow waters to save her sinking.
she was raised and temporarily repaired. she was taken to Puget sound Navy
Yard for refit and In may 1943 was in action at the Aleutians. and also
supported the Normandy Landings in June 1944 and again in the landings in Southern
France. She was transferred to the Pacific theatre where she saw service
in the Landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the Okinawa landings she
was hit by a Kamikaze which caused light damage. In July and August 1945
she served in Japanese Home waters and eventually decommissioned on the
30th October 1945. USS Nevada was used during the atomic tests in
1946, although badly damaged she remained afloat. She was used again as a
target and few experimental tests, eventually being sunk by a aerial
torpedo on the 31st July 1948. |

The Raid on Pearl Harbor, 7th December 1941 by Ivan Berryman
The view across Battleship Row, viewed from above Ford Island as the USS Nevada gallantly makes her break for the open sea, coming under heavy attack from Japanese A6M2s from the carrier Hiryu. The Nevada was eventually too badly damaged to continue and was beached to avoid blocking the harbour entrance. In the immediate foreground, the lightly damaged USS Tennessee is trapped inboard of USS West Virginia which has sunk at her moorings, leaking burning oil and hampering the daring operations to pluck trapped crew members from her decks, while just visible to the right is the stern of the USS Maryland and the capsized Oklahoma.

At dawn on the 7th December 1941, 350 Japanese warplanes flew from their carriers and attacked the US pacific fleet at Pearl harbor, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. the attack concentrated on Battleship Row which included USS California (Left) and USS Nevada (Right) which was the only battleship to get underway during the attack. However coming under intense bomb attack she was later beached. For the Japanese the success was not total, as the US carrier fleet was out on manoeuvres on the day of the attack.
