Midway Class

Built as result of the Us interest in the new British armoured flight deck carriers. These very large carriers for the time were built when it was considered that carriers may fall victim to enemy large cruiser attack so there armour  was designed to withstand the 8 inch shell damage. and the armour against torpedo attack was similar to that of Battleships.  It was viewed by the end of the war that these large carriers were a mistake but it was soon proved that these carriers were the only aircraft carriers capable and large enough to handle the new jet fighters and also the important strategic bomber the AJ Savage.  From the original 6 planned for only three were built.  and in the 1980's only the Midway and Coral sea were the last World war Two warships still  in front line service

(original data ) Displacement: 47,387 ton standard and 59,900 full load.  Speed: 33 knots  Range: 15,000 nm at 15 knots  Armament: Eighteen 5-inch guns,  Eighty four 40mm  and sixty eight 20mm, guns  and 137 aircraft.  Crew 4104

Honor the Brave by Philip West.

One of the last aircraft to come aboard following the days combat actions was the (photo-bird) RF-8G Crusader. Unarmed apart from cameras and film, the eyes of the fleet pilots roamed far and wide throughout Vietnam to bring back vital post-strike photographs and reconnaissance information. The USS Coral Sea represented one of 21 attack and anti-submarine carriers deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin. Their crews displayed courage, duty, sacrifice and service.
