Massena
French pre dreadnaught Battleship.
Photographs of the French 19th Century battleship Massena, Massena
was built at Ch de la Loire the 4th Ship in the series of Charles Martel,
but with many differences The Massena was not a successful
battleship she was 900 tons overweight.. She was laid down in September
12892 and was
launched in July 1895 commissioned into the French Navy in June
1898. Similar in appearance to Charles Martel except the funnels
were wider apart. with a cellular layer between them. She was
hulked in 1915 and later she was towed from Toulon to cape
Helles to form a breakwater for the January 1916 evacuation.
Displacement 11,735 tons,
Speed: 17 Knots. Crew 667 Armament Two 12 inch / 40 cal.
M1893 guns, Two 10.8 inch /45 calibre M1893 guns. and Eight
5.5 inch / 45 caliber guns M1888. Eight 3.9 inch, and twelve
(increased later two 16) 3 pounder. Eight 1 pounder Two 18 inch torpedo Tubes (submerged.) did have two
at AW but these were removed,.
