Toulon in 1942.

At the outbreak of war the
Montcalm along with her sister ships were among the finest cruisers in
the French navy. On the 9th September 1940 The Montcalm (along
with Marseillaise and Georges Leygues sailed form Toulon to Dakar where
they helped repulse British and Free French forces attempting to seize
the port on the 23rd to the 25th September. The cruisers remained at
Dakar until In February 1943 when they joined the free French navy
and sailed to Philadelphia major refit including the installation of
Radar and increasing their Anti aircraft armament. on the 6th June
Montclam (along with Georges Leygues) joined the naval support forces
and bombarded German positions around Omaha beach during the Normandy landings.
In August she supported allied landings on the French Riviera.
After the war Montcalm continued in the French navy until being stricken
in 1961 and broken up in 1970.
Displacement: 8342 tons normal .
and 9266 tonnes full load. Speed: 31 knots. Crew 540
Armament: Nine 152mm in triple turrets. Eight 90mm AA and
Eighteen 13.2 mm AA guns. Also carried two aircraft

Montcalm
At the
