The Pre Dreadnaught Battleships of the
Kaiser Class. Kaiser Freidrich III, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Kaiser Wilhelm
der Grosse and Kaiser Barbarossa. This class of Battleships were named
after German Emperors. On Commissioning into the German Imperial
navy they joined the 1st Squadron Home fleet (Heimatflotte). The Kaiser
Wilhelm II had been the Flagship of the German navy until 1906. After
1910 they formed the 3rd Squadron of the High seas Fleet. Placed into
reserve a few years before the outbreak of World war One. At the
Outbreak of war they were placed into the 5th Squadron until February
1915, when the 5th squadron was withdrawn from active service.
Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse became a torpedo training ship, Kaiser Wilhelm
II became a HQ ship for the German C in C. and the others became
floating prisons. Finally all being broken up in 1920 and 1921.
Kaiser Freidrich III Built at Wilhelmshaven and launched
31st July 1896, completed and commissioned 7th October 1898. In 1916
became a barrack Ship for prisoners at Keil. and in moving in 1917 to
Flensburg, anbd again to Swinemunde. Stricken on the 6th December 1919. Broken
up 1920 at Keil-Nordmol. Kaiser Freidrich III, Bow ornament is in the army
museum at Dresden.
Kaiser Wilhelm II Built at Wilhelmshaven and launched 14th September
1897, and completed 7th October 1898 commissioned into the fleet
as Flagship on the 4th February 1902. until 1906. After 1910 became part
of the 3rd squadron of the High seas fleet along with all her sister
ships In 1916 became a barrack ship for Prisoners at Wilhelmshaven,
Stricken on the 6th December 1919 and scrapped 1921 at Ronnebeck.
Kaiser Wilhelm De Grosse Built at Germaniawerft and launched 18th October
1899 and completed 4th February 1902. Served with the fleet until 1916
when she became a harbour ship at Keil, and then in 1917 became a
torpedo target ship. Stricken on the 6th December 1919 and Scrapped and bracken up 1920
at Kiel-Nordmole
Kaiser Barbarossa built at Schichau and launched 21st April
1900 and completed 10th June 1901. served with the fleet until
1916 and then became prison ship at Wilhelmshaven. stricken 6th December
1919 and finally bracken up in 1920. at Rustringen
Length: 377 ft. Beam: 66 ft. Draught: 25
ft 9 ins. Armament: 9.4 in breech-loaders, 5.9in quick
firers, 3.4 in quick firers and 1 pdr revolving guns as well as six
torpedo tubes. Compliment 651 (except Kaiser Wilhelm II as fleet flagship
a compliment of 713 ) Speed. 17 knots Displacement
