HMS Nelson - Aground at Portsmouth. At
approximately 9am on 12th January 1934, HMS Nelson drifted starboard in
a narrow channel while exiting Portsmouth Harbour, and grounded on the
shoal known as Hamilton Bank. At the time, Nelson was the flagship
of Admiral Sir William Boyle, Commander in Chief of the Home
Fleet. Below are photos capturing the event. |

Destroyers can be seen creating a wash around the
battleship in an attempt to free her. It is also said that the
crew were ordered to jump up and down at the stern of the ship to help
free her.
