HMS London two decker wooden converted screw ship of the line designed by Sir William Symonds and launched 1840. She took part in the bombardment of Fort Constantine at Sevastopol 1854 during the Crimean War but sustained damage. She was turned into a hulk at Zanzibar in 1884.

Previous HMS London. Built at Shish Deptford Dockyard but badly damaged by the Dutch and rebuilt in 1706.

This is how the ship looked after converted to steam power and stationed in Zanzibar as Headquarters for the royal Navy.

Rod E has also sent in the service record of his ancestor (above), who served on HMS St Vincent, Duke of Wellington, London etc.  He has pointed out the signature of Captain Brownrigg the year before he was killed by slavers, and also the training ship Atalanta shortly before it disappeared in 1880. The Captain of the Excellent who also signed this service record in 1884 was J. A. Fisher (John Arbuthnot Fisher), who later became the top Admiral (First Sea Lord) in charge of the Royal Navy.  (these signatures are off to the far right hand side)

Another great piece sent in by Rod E, whose ancestor kept this record either as a clerk aboard the London, or for his share of the prize money.  Highlighted in green is a record of Captain Brownrigg capturing a Dhow (arab slavers boat) on October 8th 1881.  He was killed shortly after this.  The next highlighted record is of the next captain "Luxmore" who took over after Brownrigg.

MESSAGES:The 90 gun London ended her days in 1884 at Zanzibar having spent 10 years as a depot ship and headquarters of the naval force employed in the suppression of the slave trade.   In 1881 her captain (Brownrigg) was killed by slavers while patrolling off Pemba in London's steam pinnace.   Three wounded members of her crew brought his body back to the London. Half Price! - £40.00 		Leutnant Klaus Bretschneider, Staffelkapitan of 5./JG300 kicks up the dust as he taxies his Fw190 A-8 Red One from its forest hiding place into the sunlight in preparation for take-off. The scene is northern Germany, November 1944. The Staffelkapitan will lead his 190s in a massed sturm intercept upon incoming American bombers. With Allied fighters dominating the skies, Luftwaffe fighter units took desperate measures to conceal their whereabouts. Commonplace were these hurriedly prepared strips, often near dense forests.

Half Price! - £90.00 		Lancasters of 617 Sqn Dambusters get airborne from their Scampton base at the start of their journey to the Ruhr Valley on the night of 16th May 1943 under the codename Operation Chastise. These are aircraft of the First Wave, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the Second Wave having already departed some ten minutes earlier to negotiate a more northerly route to their targets. On this momentous night, both the Möhne and Eder dams were successfully breached, whilst the Sorpe was also hit, but without serious damage. Of the nineteen aircraft that took part in the mission, eleven returned safely.

The B-17 Flying Fortress 'Memphis Belle' returns from one of her 25 mission over France and Germany. Memphis Belle, a B-17F-10-BO, USAAF Serial No.41-24485, was supplied to the USAAF on July 15th 1942, and delivered to the 91st Bomb Group in September 1942 at Dow Field, Bangor, Maine. Memphis Belle deployed to Scotland at Prestwick on September 30th 1942 and went to RAF Kimbolton on October 1st, and then to her permanent base at Bassingbourn on October 14th.1942. Memphis Belle was the first United States Army Air Force heavy bomber to complete 25 combat missions with her crew intact. The aircraft and crew then returned to the United States to promote and sell war bonds. The Memphis Belle B-17 is undergoing extensive restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Half Price! - £22.00 		On 31st August 1944, 6 Mosquitoes of 305 Polish Squadron, Lasham, 2nd TAF were led by Wing Commander Orlinski to attack oil refineries at Nomexy, south of Nancy, France. Diving down and releasing their bombs before escaping at tree top height they destroyed 4 large containers and several smaller ones. All aircraft safely returned after their four and a half hour sortie. Fl Lt Eric Atkins DFC(bar) KW(bar) and his navigator Fl Lt Majer can be seen exiting the area to reform on the other 3 Mosquitoes who have already finished their bombing run. This was Atkins 61st operation, finishing the war with 78 ops over 3 tours.

The final tally of Lawson before he was listed as missing in August 1941 was 6 confirmed, 1 shared, 3 probables and 1 damaged. The Bf.109 shown here was flown by Oberleutnant Franz von Werra. He survived this encounter, but was shot down over Kent in September 1940.

One of the finest battleships of all time, Bismarck was built by the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg and launched in February 1939. Her first duty was for commerce raiding in the north Atlantic. Together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, the destroyers Z10, Z16 and Z23 and a minesweeper. The Bismarck, commanded by Vice Admiral Gunther Lutjens, left her last anchorage at Grimstadt Fjord in Norway. Once Bismarcks departure was confirmed all available British forces were deployed to meet the threat. On the 24th of May 1941 the Bismarck sailed into naval history - sinking the battlescruiser and pride of the British fleet - HMS Hood. But Bismarck would have little time to celebrate, she was sunk by a scorned British fleet three days later. Here Bismarck is depicted on the evening of the 21st May 1941 entering the open sea on her fateful final voyage.

Half Price! - £625.00 		Bismarck, now complete and newly painted in full Baltic camouflage, returns to Hamburg for the last time as the harsh winter of 1940/41 relents and the pride of the German Kriegsmarine prepares for real action. In the distance, the pre-Dreadnought Schleswig-Holstein awaits her next commission, the old ship alternating between vital ice-breaker and air defence duties at this time. The Bismarck would in May 1941 put to sea and engage and sink HMS Hood only to be caught by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. Bismarck was pounded into a floating wreck, finally being sunk by the torpedoes of HMS Dorsetshire. From her crew of 2300 only 110 would be rescued by HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori.

Half Price! - £25.00 		With her mizzen top already gone and her sails aloft having received severe punishment, Victory breaks through the line behind the French flagship Bucentaure, delivering a shattering broadside into her stern. So severe was this opening fire that the Bucentaure was effectively put out of the rest of the battle, although Admiral Villeneuve himself was to miraculously survive the carnage. Beyong Victory can be seen the French Redoubtable, which is receiving fire from Victorys starboard guns, and the Spanish San Leandro is in the extreme distance. Most of Victorys stunsails have been cut away, but it was her stunsail booms that became entangled with the rigging of the Redoubtable when she put her helm to port and ran onto her. Admiral Nelson fell shortly afterward, having received a fatal wound from a musket ball fired by a French sharpshooter in Redoubtables mizzen fighting top. The Temeraire can be seen approaching the fray to the right.

February 1942 and Viz. Admiral Ciliaxs mighty Scharnhorst leads her sister Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen up the English Channel during Operation Cerberus, their daring breakout from the port of Brest on the French Atlantic coast to the relative safety of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. All three ships survived what became known as the Channel Dash, not without damage, but the operation proved a huge propaganda success for Germany and a crushing embarrassment for the British. A number of torpedo boats are in attendance, including Kondor and Falke and the Z class destroyer Friedrich Ihn in the distance.

She is depicted here in the Firth of Forth with the iconic Forth Bridge in the background in December 1963 when she was docked at Rosyth for re-coating of her hull and a general examination.

Together with her sister ship, Hercules, HMS Colossus acquitted herself well at the Battle of Jutland where she fired 93 12in rounds, but received only two hits from enemy fire which caused minor damage and left nine crew injured. She was sold for scrap in 1928.

By permission of David Rowlands. Battle of Minden 1st August 1759. Major battle of the Seven years war. After the French victory in April at Bergen, The French Army 60,000 strong under the command of Duc Louis de Contades marched northwards towards Hanover. To block this French Advance the Prussian Army under Field Marshall The Duke of Brunswick decided to hold the line at Minden. The Duke of Brunswick could only raise a force of 45,000 men including a British Contingent under Lord George Sackville of 6 regiments, a detachment of cavalry and some artillery. The French opened the battle attacking, the British Infantry regiments probably due to a misunderstanding, advanced and they were followed by the Hanoverian Infantry. They attacked the French cavalry. The Infantry advanced only stopping to let off a volleys of fire. This unconventional use of Infantry against cavalry, the French force confused and suffering losses broke. The victory was in Ferdinands grasp, he ordered his cavalry forward but the British general Sackville refused to send his cavalry after the French. For this action he was later court-martialled by King George II and cashiered from the army. The French were able to withdraw in order, but their losses had been 7,000 men and 43 artillery guns. The British and Hanoverian losses were less than 3,000 with 1500 of these casualties inflicted on the British Infantry. This battle ended all French hopes of capturing Hanover.
