HMS Galatea, Orlando class cruiser of
the Royal Navy. HMS Galatea was completed for sea in 1889 and was
commanded in 1896 by Captain Basil G Cochrane. During 1897-1900 the old 25
calibre 9.2 ins guns were replaced by 30 calibre guns and the old 6 ins
pieces converted to quick-firers.
Displacement: 5,600 tons. Horse power: 8,500. Length
300ft. Beam: 56 ft. Draught: 22 ft 6
ins.
Armament: two 22 ton guns, ten 6 ins guns, six 6-pounder guns and ten 3-pounder
quick-firers, and had a partial belt of 10 ins armour. Speed:18.1 knots.

HMS Galatea Coastguard Ship at Hull
The Galatea was a steel first-class cruiser and was completed for
sea in 1889. She was built by Messrs. Napier of Glasgow, and engined by
the same firm. She was commanded in 1896 by Captain Basil G Cochrane.

Captain landing from Galatea.
Card has names on reverse : Capt P Wilkins (possibly
Tomkins?), Com C Peel, 1st Lieut G R L Edwards. The liferings
say Galatea, Liverpool. Looking for confirmation that we have the
correct identification here. There was a tender at Liverpool of that
name, at around this time, but there is weaponry on the ship shown here.
