Grenvilles Revenge by Brian Wood (GS)

Grenvilles Revenge by Brian Wood (GS)

The English fleet pursued the Armada up the English Channel and, as darkness fell, Vice Admiral Drake broke off and captured the Spanish galleon Rosario, Admiral Pedro de Valdes and the crew. The Rosario was known to be carrying substantial funds to pay the Spanish Army in the Low Countries. Drakes ship had been leading the English pursuit of the Armada by means of a lantern. By extinguishing this for the capture, Drake put the fleet into disarray overnight. On the night of 29th July 1588, Vice Admiral Drake organised fire-ships, causing most of the Spanish captains to break formation and sail out of Calais . The next day, Drake was present at the Battle of Gravelines. English losses were comparatively few, and none of their ships were sunk.

The Battle of Jutland, HMS Royal Oak by Anthony Saunders (GS)

The Battle of Jutland, HMS Royal Oak by Anthony Saunders (GS)

The British Grand Fleet had been virtually unopposed for nearly a century but now there was a challenge to the throne: the German Navy. Although smaller, it had caught up fast and by the time of Jutland, had some telling advantages over the British Fleet. the plan for the battle was to lure the British Grand Fleet into a lethal trap in German waters. In the event although desperately fought by both sides, the battle was a stale mate. the confused conflict was hampered on both sides by bad luck, bad weather and poor communications. at the end of the battle, the Royal navy had suffered higher losses in men and ships, but the German fleet never ventured out of harbour to seek battle again.

Bismarck Replies to HMS Hood by Ivan Berryman (GL)

Bismarck Replies to HMS Hood by Ivan Berryman (GL)

The mighty Bismarck returns fire to the fast-approaching HMS Hood at the start of a battle that would see both adversaries tragically sunk. The Bismarck would later be attacked by Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal, damaging her stearing and allowing her to be caught by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. The once proud German battleship would be ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck and finally finished by HMS Dorsetshire with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300.

The Battle of Manila Bay by Anthony Saunders (GS)

The Battle of Manila Bay by Anthony Saunders (GS)

A splendid little war was how John Hay, ambassador to Britain, described the Spanish-American war of 1898. Though the war was small in scope it was large in consequences; it promoted the regeneration of the American Navy and the emergence of the United States as a major world power. Fought primarily at sea, the war created an American naval legend in its opening encounter between the pacific squadrons of Spain and the United States at Manila Bay on the 1st of May 1898. At sunrise Admiral Dewey, leading the American fleet in his flagship the USS Olympia, had caught the Spanish fleet, under Admiral Patricio Montojo, by surprise - still anchored off Sangley Point at Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands. Defeat for the Spanish was total and heralded the end of a once extensive Spanish empire in the Americas. Montojos flagship, Reina Cristina, is seen here under fire from the Olympia.

Against All Odds - Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman (GS)

Against All Odds - Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman (GS)

Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft.

The Brave Redoutable by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

The Brave Redoutable by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

Already ravaged by incoming shot from the combined French and Spanish fleets as she approached the enemy line, HMS Victory found herself under intense attack from the French 3rd Rate 74-gun Redoutable. The two ships became entangled, grappling irons went across and the most terrible artillery battle commenced. Admiral Lord Nelson was fatally wounded by a shot from the Redoutables mizzen top before it was brought crashing down. Now the British three-decker, the 98-gun Temeraire appeared outboard of the Redoutable and began pouring further shot into her, the little French ship dwarfed by two mighty British vessels. But still she fought on, refusing to strike her colours. Of all the ships at Trafalgar, Redoutable sustained the highest casualties with 478 killed and 81 wounded. Depicted from left to right are HMS Temeraire, Redoutable and HMS Victory.

Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter by Ivan Berryman. (GL)

Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter by Ivan Berryman. (GL)

The potential value of aircraft at sea had been proven as early as the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and many experiments were undertaken to provide all significant warships with their own aircraft for spotting and reconnaissance purposes. One solution widely adopted was the fitting of flying-off platforms to the main guns, as demonstrated here, as a Sopwith 1½ strutter is launched from HMS Warspite in 1919.

HMS Hermes - Under Leaden Skies by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

HMS Hermes - Under Leaden Skies by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

Laid down as early as June 1944, HMS Hermes (R12) was not commissioned into the Royal Navy until 25th November 1959. This fine ship has enjoyed a long and varied career, perhaps its most notable role being that of flagship to the British Task Force that was sent to liberate the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982. She was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to the Indian Navy, whereupon she was renamed Viraat. Hermes is depicted here in stormy weather in the late 1970s before the Harrier 'ski jump' was added to her bow in readiness for the Falklands Campaign.

HMS Poseidon by Ivan Berryman. (P)

HMS Poseidon by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Launched in Barrow in Furness on 22nd August 1929, the Parthian Class submarine HMS Poseidon (P99) was destined to meet a tragic fate on 9th June 1931 when she was inexplicably involved in a collision with a Chinese freighter in the Bohai Sea during exercises in clear visibility. 31 of her crew managed to get into the water before the submarine sank, whilst a further eight escaped from the submerged vessel. Two of these didn't make it to the surface and one died later in hospital, making a tragic total of 21 deaths in this extraordinary tragedy. HMS Poseidon is depicted here in happier times, moving off from her depot ship as the night sky closes in.

Secret Operation by Robert Taylor.

Secret Operation by Robert Taylor.

Submariners are a special breed of sailor. Their environment, operating deep beneath the surface of the waves, is both unnatural and dangerous, and demands men of cool courage and exceptional quality. Prowling the depths like a mammoth shark, sometimes hunted, submarine crews live and fight, and sometimes die together, alone in the remote expanses of the worlds great oceans. Regardless of national flag under which they sail, this small elite Silent Service is both feared and admired by all who sail the seas. Plying their deadly trade in World War Two, the German U-boats posed such threat to the vital Atlantic convoys; Winston Churchill feared the submarine threat more than anything Hitler had at his disposal. Hunting in wolf packs, roaming the shipping lanes far beyond the reach of protective aircraft, they decimated the Allied merchant vessels during the Battle of the Atlantic. Manned entirely by volunteers, British and American submarines saw action in every maritime theatre during.........

HMS Captain at the Battle of Cape St Vincent by Ivan Berryman

HMS Captain at the Battle of Cape St Vincent by Ivan Berryman

Viewed across the damaged stern of the 80-gun San Nicholas, Nelson drives HMS Captain onto the Spanish vessel in order that she can be boarded and taken as a prize, the British marines and men scrambling up the Captains bowsprit to use it as a bridge. The San Nicholas then fouled the Spanish three decker San Joseph (112), allowing Nelson and his men to take both ships as prizes in a single manoeuvre. A British frigate is moving into a supporting position in the middle distance.
