French
Submarine Gustave Zede, launched 1st June 1893. Photographs and
history of the early French Submarine Gustave Zede.
The Gustave Zede was originally to be named Sirene when she was
ordered on the 4th October 1890. but renamed in 1891 as the Gustave Zede.
The Gustave Zede was a Roma Bronze single hull submarine designed by M
Romazotti. and also fitted with a detachable lead keel. The Gustave Zede
suffered some minor problems at the beginning mainly due to weight and
poor design of her batteries, To improve her stability extra hydroplanes
were fitted., After these modifications the Gustave Zede became a
great success. During her trials she traveled submerged from
Toulon to Marseilles a distance of 41 nm. during her career she
dived more 2,500 times without accidents. and she was the first
submarine to use a periscope.
