In January 1944 USS Johnston  joined Task Force 53 commanded by Rear-Admiral Connolly. The task force landed the 4th Marine Division on Roi Atoll, Central Pacific. In July she joined Task Force 53.2 under Rear-Admiral Reifsnider, the task Force landed the 1st marine Brigade and part of the 77th Infantry Division on Guam.  In October 1944 during the battle of Leyte USS Johnston was apart of a seven destroyer force assigned to Rear Admiral Spragues Task Force Unit 3.  On the 24th the task Force intercepted Japanese warships attempting the escape from the Leyte Gulf, through the Straits of San Berbadino.  USS Johnston along with USS Hoel fired torpedoes at the Japanese cruiser Kumano which hit and brought her to a stand still.  \but the |Destroyers came under heavy fire form the mighty Japanese battleship Yamato and Negato both destroyers were sunk. (along with USS Samuel B Roberts and the escort carrier Gambier Bay)
