In January 1944 USS Johnston joined Task Force 53 commanded by Rear-Admiral Connolly. The task force landed the 4th Marine Division on Roi Atoll, Central Pacific. In July she joined Task Force 53.2 under Rear-Admiral Reifsnider, the task Force landed the 1st marine Brigade and part of the 77th Infantry Division on Guam. In October 1944 during the battle of Leyte USS Johnston was apart of a seven destroyer force assigned to Rear Admiral Spragues Task Force Unit 3. On the 24th the task Force intercepted Japanese warships attempting the escape from the Leyte Gulf, through the Straits of San Berbadino. USS Johnston along with USS Hoel fired torpedoes at the Japanese cruiser Kumano which hit and brought her to a stand still. \but the \|Destroyers came under heavy fire form the mighty Japanese battleship Yamato and Negato both destroyers were sunk. (along with USS Samuel B Roberts and the escort carrier Gambier Bay)

USS Heermann (DD532) First saw service in November 1943 during the Operation Galvanic, the American landings at Tarawa and the other islands in the Gilbert Islands. She gave fire support to the US 2nd marine Division. which took part in some of the hardest fighting for the islands. USS Hermann took par tin the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 and in March 1945 she was part of the large force escorting carriers for the first major attacks on the Japanese home Islands. ON the 17th April, 19145 she was part of the unit that sunk the Japanese submarine I-56 off Okinawa. She continued in the role of escorting Battleships and Carriers in the pacific and in August as part of Force 38 which sailed in to Sagami Bay to receive the Japanese surrender She was eventually sold to the Argentineans in August 1961 to become the Almirante Brown.

Naval Historians, Crew & Family Noticeboard MESSAGES USS TWIGGS.. During WW2 I had a cousin serving on the USS Twiggs at the battle for Okinawa and was killed. I have been trying to find a photo of that Fletcher Class destroyer to present at our family reunion. Can you help? USS BULLARD..
