 Eclipse  Wooden Screw Corvettes

The Surveyor to the Royal Navy during 1863 to 1870, Sir Edward Reid was the designer of these seven Wooden Screw Corvettes. HMS Eclipse, Blanche, Danae, Dido, Sirius, Spartan and HMS Tenedos.  initially designed to be Ram-bow Sloops,  but were upgraded to become Corvettes, with similarities to the Amazon class Corvettes apart form being 25 feet longer.

HMS Eclipse was built at Sheerness Dockyard and launched on the  14th November 1867, and completed in June 1868. her  Displacement was 1755tons. and speed 12.24 Knots she was armed with  Two 7 -inch MLR and four 64 Pounder MLR, later her 7-inch guns were removed and a total of twelve 64 pounder  were fitted.

HMS Blanche

HMS Blanche - Name History

The eighth ?Blanche? was a 6-gun screw sloop, launched at Chatham in 1867.  She was of 1755 tons, 2158 horsepower, and 13.5 knots speed.  Hr length, beam and draught were 212ft, 36ft, and 16ft.  In September 1868 the ?Blanche? Captain john E. Montgomerie, shelled one or two villages as a punitive measure at Rodora Bay, in the Solomon Islands.  In 1886 this vessel was sold for ?3600.
