History of  Royal Navy Light Cruisers . Royal Navy cruiser website dedicated to the "E" Class. HMS Emerald, HMS Enterprise including crew and families of ex-crew members notice board for the "E" Class cruisers.

Initially there were three ships of this class ordered the third HMS Euphrates was cancelled in November 1918.  HMS Emerald  was built by Armstong and laid down on the 19th May 1920 and completed in January 1926.  HMS Enterprise was built by John Brown on the Clyde laid down on the 28th June 1918 and launched on the 23rd December 1919. Completed April 1926.   These ships were fairly similar to the D class, But Speed was the major factor not armament.  

HMS Emerald  after her commission  in August 1926 went to Gibraltar, Malta (26th - 28yth August)  and onto to Aden. on her way to the China station, spending Christmas in Singapore and onto to Hong Kong.  In August 1927 HMS Emerald left the China Station and joined up with HMS Enterprise at Trincomali on the 30th August 1927. leaving on the 3rd September for Colombo. meeting up again with HMS Enterprise and r e leaving her at Karachi. on December 9th 1927. Serving in the Persian Gulf until 4th  April 1928. leaving for Colombo.

At the Outbreak of World war two. HMS Emerald Served on Atlantic Convoy duty 1939 to 1940, then to the East Indies 1941 -- 1942 and moving to the eastern Fleet 1942 to 1944 and in 1945 moving to reserve fleet.

HMS Enterprise also was on Atlantic Convoy Duty during 1939 to 1940 Home fleet 1940, Moving to the South Atlantic 1940 - 1941, East Indies 1941 - 1942, Joining Eastern Fleet 1942 - 1943. Home Fleet 1943 - 1944 and placed into reserve 1945.

 

Displacement: 7,550 tons (Emerald), 7,580 tons (Enterprise)   Speed: 33kt    Complement: 572

Armament: Seven 6 inch guns, Three 4 inch anti-aircraft guns and two 2pdr anti-aircraft guns.   Sixteen 21 inch torpedo tubes and 1 aircraft.

HMS ENTERPRISE

ALBERT JAMES DIXON.. My grandfather, Arthur (known as Dick by his friends) was PO on HMS Enterprise during the early war years and I would love to hear from anyone who knew him.  Contact me at helen-mark@blueyonder.co.uk 

CHRISTOPHER DAVID LLOYD.. Chris served aboard Enterprise when he was 20-21 as a PO in the Fleet Air Arm during the war. Sadly he died this week (6th Feb 2003) aged 81. Does anyone remember him? Contact me at Petelloyd@aol.com 

THOMAS FREDERIC BISHOP.. Trying to trace the last days of my uncle plus any other information. He was an assistant steward No. C/LX22866. He died on 7th November 1939 from injuries sustained while on board HMS Emerald. Any info on what action the ship was involved in appreciated. Contact me at m.t.bishop@btopenworld.com 

ERNEST GILBERT ROYSTON DAVIS (known as Sailor)...I am looking for information on HMS Enterprise from her launch in 1926 until 1938. I am interested in the tours she did and where she went as it is during this time my grandfather served on her. Apparently he travelled the world three times on her. WILLIAM HENRY FREDERICK OWENS. I am looking for information on William Owens who served on HMS Emerald (either this light cruiser or the earlier store carrier in use between 1900-1915). LAWRENCE WILLIAM FRANKLIN DALE.. My Grandfather served on HMS Emerald in early 1941, whilst on convoy duties in the East Indies. he was He was serving having been called up as a reservist asa he had served during World war One. he died whilst serving on HMS Emerald between Feb and June 1941 in circumstances that have never been fully understood by his family. I have a prayer card dated September 1939 and with the handwritten name:A.W.Simpson, HMS Emerald.These cards were distributed from chaplain of the fleet with the instruction "slip this inside your cap".
