The
Duke Class Type 23 frigate was a lower cost frigate than the Type
22. Improved fire precaution and damage control was improved a
lesson learnt from t e Falklands conflict. The Type 23 frigates HMS Kent,
Portland, Grafton. Sutherland, Somerset, St Albans, Lancaster, Norfolk,
Argyll, Marlborough, Iron Duke, Monmouth, Westminster, Northumberland, and
HMS Richmond. Displacement:
3500 tons, and full load weight of 4,200 tons. Speed: 28 Knots,
range 8,500 NM. Compliment: 169 of which 12 Officers and 157 Ratings.
Armament: 8 RGM 84C harpoon SSM, 32 GWS26 Mod 1 VL Seawolf SAM
systems. One 4.5 inch Gun, two single 30mm guns
Four 2 twin Magazine launched Torpedo Tubes using Stingray
Torpedoes. On Lynx helicopter except HMS Lancaster which has a
Merlin. |

HMS Montrose escorting the damaged Canadian submarine
HMCS Chicoutimi back to Faslane Naval Base. The submarine (ex HMS
Upholder) was handed over to the Canadian Navy at the same base on
Saturday 2nd October, before losing power in the Irish Sea only days
afterwards. One crew member was killed in the incident, and HMS
Montrose was sent to escort the submarine back to Faslane under tow.
The vessels arrived on Sunday 10th October. |
