These destroyers although shown as three Classes on the main list, were all built by Thornycroft and were basically the same.  Similar to the Ardent design. Their Displacement was 310 tons, Speed 30 Knots, Compliment: 63 and Armament: One 1 2pounder and two torpedo Tubes. The Destroyers were later to be called D class, and were constructed of a High tensile steel, this helped save weight. All these Destroyers (accept HMS Fame which served in the China

HMS Ariel, Laid down 23rd April 1896, launched 5th march 1897 and completed October 1898, served in the Mediterranean, until running into rocks of a breakwater on Malta in the Pitch Dark  night during a Gale in 1907.

HMS Fame 15th April 1896 Broken up in 1921.
HMS Foam 8th October 1896 Broken up 1920
HMS Angler 2nd February 1897 Broken up in 1920.
HMS Ariel 5th March 1897 Wrecked 1907.
HMS Coquette 25th November 1897 Mined in 1916.
HMS Cynthia 8th January 1898 Broken up in 1920.
HMS Cygnet 3rd September 1898 Broken up in 1920.
HMS Stag 18th November 1899 Broken up in 1921.
HMS Mallard 19th November 1896 Broken up in 1920.

HMS Foam, Built by Thornycroft, and laid down 16th July 1895, launched 8th October 1896. and completed July 1897. served most of its service life in the m\Mediterranean before coming back to home waters, and during world war one served on coastal defence duties.  Was the first of the class to be sold and Broken up in 1914.
