The
Broadbeamed Group of Leander frigates HMS Andromeda, Hermione,
Jupiter, Scylla, Charybdis, Achilles, Ariadne, Diomede and HMS Apollo were
designed with a view for increasing their life span for future
modifications an extra 2 feet were added to the beam which increased
stability and endurance with a slight reduction in speed. It
was planned that between 1977 and 1984 all the Broad beamed class
Frigates would undergo modernisation, with HMS Andromeda being the first
in 1977 and being completed in 1980. But after the defence
cuts of 1981. only HMS Hermione, HMS Danae, Ariadne, Scylla
and HMS Charybdis ha been modernized the rest were sold
